Expressions of Faith : Testimonies of Latter-day Saint Scholars
I found this collection of personal essays very honest and candid. I respect these individuals as educated and thoughtful individuals. I think those characteristics come across in their writings. I think a few things come across as major themes: all had had doubts at some point in their life, each proactively sought for answers, they also had a certain sense of patience and humility about their own knowledge and in the timetable of getting answers to their questions, each was willing to act on faith.
Nibley on the Timely and Timeless
This is a collection of essays by Hugh Nibley that can act as a good introduction to his writings and the depth of Mormon doctrine. Anyone who spends time in this space of ‘scholarly’ Mormonism will know his name; he is hard to ignore, and dismiss; you will either love him or hate him. I think my confidence in Hugh Nibley was most influenced by reading his biography by Boyd Peterson. I find him to be a completely fascinating individual and I believe his life story speaks of his genius and faith.
Five Classics by Truman Madsen
I have always admired the scholarship and faith of Truman Madsen. I find his favorite topics many of the same that interest me, philosophy, love, and the temple. Again I recommend this book as an introduction. I personally found his lecture series “Timeless Questions, Gospel Insights” most fascinating and thought provoking.
Approaching Zion
Out of all the collected works of Hugh Nibley I find this to be the most challenging to myself and my decisions of how I live my life. I find it particularly profound in its implications and getting to the heart of our purpose on this earth.
