Poverty and suffering are perhaps some of the most challenging thoughts for a religious seeker to confront and reconcile. This Wednesday offers a good opportunity to flush out some of your thoughts as Blog Action Day 2008 is challenging all bloggers to discuss the issue of poverty to launch a worldwide conversation. I am perhaps most fascinated and excited by this model of journalism, a kind of open source community effort focusing on a global issue. I will posting my thoughts from a professional perspective over at my blog on MicroFranchising and if I can work in two posts in one day I would love to address the issue from a religious perspective in this forum. If you plan on posting yourself go to the Blog Action Day website to register to help them show the impact of the day.

I was introduced to an exhibit produced by a photographer out of Arizona which depicts scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. It is an absolutely beautiful collection of images. I commend the artists and the producers for both the spirit they captured and art they produced. I understand there are talks that will bring it to the National Cathedral in Washington D.C. as well as the LDS Visitor’s Center. I look forward to seeing it in person. Behind the scenes video about the production can be seen at reflectionsofchrist.org.

More than half of the sunlike stars in the galaxy could have terrestrial planets with the potential to harbor life, a new study suggests.

The research, announced yesterday at a meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Boston, Massachusetts, is just one of a set of recent findings that suggest the roster of potential life-harboring worlds is huge—even in our own solar system.

An interesting post the other day at Summa Theologica about the traditional text-centered dialogue about Mormonism as opposed to one that analyzes actual practice, ritual, and devotion in an attempt to understand a group of people. The post resonated with me because part of the reason I started this blog was because I was absolutely bored with the dialogue that so often accompanies Mormonism on the internet; pointless quibbling over trivial matters, picking out an isolated quote here and an isolated quote there and trying to disparage a people. I find such discussions a waste of time.Delving into the important questions of life and the unique Mormon answer to many of those questions is so much more complex and rich than getting tied up in obscure quotations of Brigham Young.Hopefully it is discernible from my posts that I like to take a step back and see themes, patterns, and parallels. I also often speak from a perspective slightly removed from the participants including speaking about Mormonism as a third party observer, which I most definitely am, while also being a participant. Outsiders will continue to be confused and frustrated with the Mormons until they can see them in the context of the complete religious/historical panorama.
